Jim Arter


In honor of our Alchemical artist reception tonight we had a personal interview with local painter and sculptor Jim Arter, who's work is now hanging in the show.


Where are you currently living?
In Olde Towne East, Columbus, Ohio


What is your definition of sculpting?
My definition of sculpting is working/playing with materials that evolve into 3 dimensional forms that are catalysts for conversation and thought. This includes my garden.

What three words would you use to describe your work?
My work is engaging, whimsical, thought provoking.


What’s your earliest drawing memory?
I was playing/working with drawings color and creating 3-dimensional works before entering kindergarten.



What has been your most rewarding experience with the Greater Columbus Arts Council?
My most rewarding experiences with the Greater Columbus Arts Council have been working with the children and the artists that have been in our programs.


Are there any artists that inspire your work? If so who?
Artists that inspire me are Beethoven, Judy Garland, Claus Oldenberg, Van Gogh, Disney, Aaron Copland, Louise Nevelson and children.

Favorite client so far?
Favorite client thus far is Malcom Forbes and “Art for Life”


What’s the most important object in your studio? 
Most important object in my studio is light and my eraser.

How would your friends describe your profession?
Friends describe my profession as artist, educator and activist.

Describe one challenge you constantly face in your practice.
My most consistent challenge is finding the appropriate balance between time for work, play and reflection.


How do you know when an artwork is complete?

I know when an artwork is complete primarily by intuition.


What advice would you give to a young artist creating work in Ohio?
Advice to young artists is…”Remain open to change while staying true to yourself.”

Hey everyone! We are excited to make our first post on our blog, its been a long time coming! Here at CS Gallery, we have been preparing for the Alchemical show that is now up through the 31st of July. The Alchemical show is a special exhibition celebrating all things metal with local artists! We have Steam Punk, graffiti and even a giant metal gum wrapper. If that doesn't get you excited, then maybe the complimentary food and free in house beer from Elevator Brewery & Draught will! Come check out the Alchemical artist  reception July 28th 8-11PM!
